In commemoration of October’s Domestic Violence Awareness month, the W.I.N.C. co-sponsored the 13th Annual Silent March Against Domestic Violence in Downtown Flushing. In an effort to prevent and end domestic violence and relationship abuse, the W.I.N.C. mobilized participants and marched for 3 hours in memory of the victims and honored who have survived violence.
On March 2nd, New York Immigration Coalition called for a walk in Albany to request for crucial social programs that may help immigrant New Yorkers acquiring necessary skills and create diverse workforces that would eventually rebuild our economy. As a sister and a supporter of this cause, The Women In Need Center played a major role in this walk by representing the Asian women who are often marginalized for their immigrant and gender status in our society.
On July 1st, the W.I.N.C. hosted the second annual Women’s Leadership Seminar called “Helping Women In Need.” Participants included OASIS, Maryland Hope House, and other various agencies opposing military-base prostitution. Discussions included the topics of inter-married women, women in prostitution, multi-cultural families and children, advocacy effort for the rights of women and children, and the need for networking effort among the interest groups.
Change begins with the youth. That is why the Center continuously strives to provide educational preventative programs in order to raise awareness of women’s issues in our society and encourage community leaders to create collaborative efforts for finding solutions cooperatively. This year, the Center held a NYC Healthy Relationship Training Workshop in coordination with the NYC Mayor’s Office to combat domestic violence as part of the community education program. The workshop training was held for two days for educating 13 high school students on the topics of domestic violence, dating violence, and effective facilitation.
“One Day Restaurant” is fundraising event for the programs and funds to make the Women In Need Center possible. A self-employed patron from Flushing provides a location where the staff and volunteers of the Women In Need Center prepare food to sell for the fundraising event. It started with a “One Day Coffee House” and for the past five years the “One Day Restaurant” has become a meaningful event that bring many support and interest for the Women In Need Center.
The Annual Benefit Dinner is an event that allows the Rainbow Center to introduce the variety of programs and activities specific for every year to the sponsors and supporters and furthermore reinforces the direction and goal of the Center.
